Integrating eSync with AWS IoT Core: Driving Connected Vehicles and Software Defined-Vehicles

As vehicles evolve into rolling computers, automakers face the challenge of managing massive amounts of data, secure connectivity, and continuous updates across complex systems. Here, the combination of eSync technology and AWS IoT Core is transforming the landscape. Together, they provide a secure, scalable, and standards-based backbone for automotive OTA, vehicle diagnostics, and automotive data aggregation.

This blog explores how eSync and AWS IoT Core work in tandem to power smarter fleets, streamline updates, and accelerate the shift toward software-defined vehicles (SDVs). eSync technology in automotive OTA pairs with AWS IoT Core to create a clean, end-to-end path from cloud to vehicle and back again. The distributed model—Server in the cloud, Client in the TCU/gateway, and multiple Agents for divergent HPCs, ECUs and smart sensors—uses lightweight, reliable messaging to coordinate updates, vehicle diagnostics, and telemetry.

On the transport side, AWS IoT Core provides a secure, managed broker; devices connect over MQTT, HTTPS, or WebSocket with TLS, delivering scale and confidentiality without running your own messaging fabric. In practice, many deployments utilize distinct MQTT topics, or “pipes,” for commands, vehicle diagnostics, and automotive data aggregation; these map neatly onto AWS IoT Core topics.

Making Vehicle Data Usable Across Teams

To make data usable across teams and programs, eSync technology can feed AWS Vehicle Knowledge Graph constructs—typically built with AWS IoT FleetWise vehicle models and signal catalogs. The graph standardizes signals and relationships (sensors, actuators, decoders), so downstream apps consistently understand what’s what across diverse trims and ECUs.

eSync Agents map to the managed endpoints, and selective data collection via eDatX publishes chosen amount of data into the graph-backed pipeline. This reduces noise and cost while preserving context, enabling scalable data aggregation for the automotive industry.

Managed Vehicle Operations with eSync and AWS

For managed vehicle operations such as day-to-day fleet health, commands, and state monitoring, you can align eSync OTA campaigns and policies with AWS IoT operational primitives.

eSync provides campaign-specific policies that set guardrails, such as:

  • Only update when
  • The gear shift is in Park
  • Charger is connected
  • The battery is above a set percentage

Each process is fully logged and auditable, providing visibility into who, what, and when for every programmable device in every vehicle in the fleet. AWS IoT Core adds lifecycle events, presence topics, and APIs (via FleetWise) to create and manage vehicle entities at scale. Together, these let you schedule, stage, and verify multi-ECU operations with clear rollback paths and compliance records, streamlining automotive OTA for SDVs.

Closing the Loop with Analytics and ML

Close the loop with analytics and machine learning. Data arriving through AWS IoT Core can stream into Amazon Timestream and Amazon S3, flow through Kinesis Data Firehose and Amazon EMR/Presto for ETL, then train models in SageMaker—visualized in QuickSight for operations.

eSync technology can then deploy updated binaries, configurations, or even quantized ML models back to the edge via automotive OTA. Adaptive delta compression from eDatX minimizes airtime and cost while maintaining data integrity. The result is a continuous cycle of measurement, improvement, and deployment across connected fleets, with real-time vehicle diagnostics informing more intelligent decision-making.

In essence

The integration of eSync technology with AWS IoT Core is more than a technical upgrade—it’s a critical enabler for the next generation of connected mobility. By unifying automotive OTA, vehicle diagnostics, and automotive data aggregation, automakers gain the ability to reduce downtime, cut costs, and continuously enhance in-vehicle experiences. This ecosystem provides reliability, scalability, and security for fleets of all sizes.
